Biomechanics
Assessment & Coaching
An inside-out assessment of how your body stabilises, aligns and transfers load.
The unseen foundation of efficient movement.
An inside-out assessment of how your body stabilises, aligns and transfers load.
The unseen foundation of efficient movement.
I see biomechanics as the foundation of intelligent movement. This in-depth assessment is a full-body MOT, designed to help you understand how and why your body moves the way it does, so you can move with greater ease, stability and confidence.
Ideal if you’re managing an injury, experiencing recurring niggles, or wanting to optimise your Pilates practice and everyday movement, this assessment looks beyond symptoms to uncover the patterns beneath.
Biomechanics explores how the body loads, stabilises and compensates. Using a blend of clinical insight and Pilates-led observation, we assess both the deeper internal structures that support movement, and how those structures express themselves in real-world patterns such as walking, running or functional strength work.
I know that pain and movement limitations often don’t start where they show up. Research shows that many common issues originate far from the site of pain, particularly where the pelvis, shoulder and lower limb interact within the kinetic chain. For example:
Studies demonstrate that pelvic mechanics influence shoulder range of motion, indicating how interconnected the upper and lower segment truly are.
Systematic reviews show that shoulder pain and dysfunction are associated with pain or injury elsewhere in the kinetic chain, including lower back, hip, knee and ankle regions in athletes, suggesting that altered shoulder mechanics can correspond to compensatory patterns down the body.
Further extensive biomechanical research highlights how movement patterns, such as gait, are linked to structural and functional outcomes in the lower limb, including osteoarthritis progression when aberrant loading is present.
When the body compensates for deeper imbalances, excess load is often passed along the chain, from pelvis to hip to knee and foot, until discomfort appears. Your assessment brings clarity to where these patterns begin and how to address them, supporting:
Healthier posture and more efficient movement habits
Reduced risk of injury and recurring pain
Stronger, more balanced muscle engagement
Long-term resilience and confidence in your body
We explore movement through two complementary lenses:
Intrinsic Biomechanics: What’s happening beneath the surface
A detailed screening of joints, muscles, nerves and alignment to understand how your body is structured and supported. Because the body is a master of compensation, these deeper influences often go unnoticed, yet they frequently explain recurring discomfort, fatigue or limitations in performance.
Extrinsic Biomechanics: How movement shows up
Gentle observation of functional movement patterns, such as walking, running or squatting. Using coaching cues and visual feedback, we explore how your intrinsic mechanics express themselves in real-world movement, and where efficiency can be improved.
1. Full Intrinsic Biomechanics Screening
A whole-body assessment of joint function, muscular balance, range of motion and stability patterns, using evidence-based biomechanics protocols.
2. Movement & Running Observation (where relevant)
A coached analysis of posture, foot strike, cadence, propulsion and load management, always adapted to your goals and lifestyle.
3. Strength & Stability Testing
Targeted testing to identify areas of weakness, compensation or asymmetry that may be increasing strain or injury risk.
4. Personalised Coaching & Exercise Plan
Clear, practical feedback plus tailored corrective and supportive exercises you can integrate seamlessly into your Pilates practice, training or daily life.
Following your assessment, we can:
Integrate your findings into a bespoke movement programme
Support your rehabilitation or performance goals with ongoing coaching
Recommend further care or referral where appropriate
This is not about fixing a body that’s “wrong”, it’s about understanding how your whole movement system relates, adapts and strengthens in response to thoughtful coaching.
